The Paintings
1965-1985
I want to find my own small plot or pattern of energy that will express the inner me in terms of rhythmic movement and color.
— Vivian Springford
By the late 1960s, Springford had begun to create compositions from diluted acrylic in a manner that soon evolved into her mature Chromatic Pool paintings. These works are marked by their centrifugal compositions, as paint ripples out from a central point in the canvas to create overlapping layers of form and color. Many of these reach to capture the grand visual qualities of spaces that Springford explored in her travels, such as Tanzania, Martinique, and the Himalayas, as well as efforts to render the cosmos.
